Book Review – The Last Stars in the Sky by Kate Hewitt

The Last Stars in the Sky (Lost Lake Book 1) <— This one gave me the ultimate blurb jolt, and I one-clicked it so hard!!! I had my hopes set on a certain outcome by what the blurb hinted at, and it delivered!!

Maryse: I JUST ONE-CLICKED THIS ONE ’cause it sounds incredible!! And it’s SUPER-BARGAIN priced right now. YAY ME!!!

“...just eight hours after I tucked my daughters into bed, feeling so hopeful, the world as I knew it—as anyone knew it—was gone for good…”

Michele G: I snagged it too!!

Maryse: I went down to scan the reviews real quick, and immediately saw the one word I was looking for that confirmed I wanted to one-click it ASAP!!!

If you’re like me, and love the whole “end of the world as we know it” but WHILE it’s happening (not necessarily the aftermath, though I love those too), then this is for you. It’s not horror (my version of “horror” in this genre would include murderous monsters – whether human or alien invasion or zombies or the like), however it IS terrifying.

Maryse: I’m halfway through “The Last Stars in the Sky” and loving it. Exactly what I was in the mood for. The writing is excellent, the reactions totally relatable despite the crazy circumstances, the emotions are raw and palpable… I’m on the edge of my seat. Just a thrilling read.

Chris: Im about 35% in!

Maryse: Are you liking it? I just love her writing… it all flows so well.

Chris: Yes! Went in blind. Love the writing.

Linda: Loved The Last Stars in the Sky!! The storyline was really unexpected! Went in blind!

Alice: I have this one on TBR list.

Brenae: Just finished this one and absolutely left me in a book funk!! Loved it!! 😍😍 Thanks!!

It’s the what if. And the what if (even in real life) would be never ending which is terrifying in itself, let alone the obvious terrors presented to you on the spot. The constant dread. The potential of what’s yet to come.

Also, while some of my favorites bombard you with a plethora of devastating and scary run for your life scenes one after the next (kind of like 28 Days Later – HOLY MOLY that one is unforgettable and what a start), this reads in a quieter, yet equally eerie atmosphere. Kind of like… Leave the World Behind. Not the same story, but similar in certain situations and in tone.

So what’s it about?

A husband and wife (and their kids), experiencing marital strife and financial struggles decide to start over, and temporarily move to the wife’s family’s childhood cottage by a lake, in Canada. While their son stays behind for college in the United States, they drag their teen daughter (practically kicking and screaming) with them, in hopes to regather, reconnect, and figure out their next steps.

And while it’s a huge adjustment, from city life in the United States, to a quiet, more rural life in Canada, she begins feeling a certain amount of hope, while memories of her childhood bring her back to a simpler and happier time in her life. She hopes she can share that with her angsty teen.

That is… until she wakes up one morning and the world as we know it has come apart, in the most hideous ways. And this is where our story begins.

I absolutely LOVE (only in books!!!) “living” with the characters in question, realizing, adjusting, compensating, reevaluating, and… surviving during devastating and harrowing moments. While I love shocking scenes (and this book has a few of those, to be sure), I love the quiet contemplation and dread, while taking stock of what one must do to survive. Of the research and learning, of the exploring, of the connections made in the process. Of the realization that everything that mattered before, does not matter at all, anymore.

And the hope that… maybe… just maybe, they can hide out from the world, and survive (and maybe even thrive) on their own terms.

4 STARS! <— While it wasn’t my perfect “apocalypse” book, I enjoyed it. The beginning had me hooked, and I devoured it the whole way through, While I wish we had stayed with the wife’s POV (I had to suspend a level of disbelief for her husband’s perilous journey), it had a few terrifying moments that kept me on the edge of my seat, while allowing me to settle in with them while they got to work on their own new lives. I suspect there will be more to come. 😉
